The Indian Parliament attack 2001case convict, Afzal Guru has been finally hanged in Tihar Jail, Delhi on 9th February, 2013 at 8:00 AM IST. Though it had taken very long to punish the convict of 2001 parliament terrorist attack case, but finally India seems to be tough now against the terrorists.
“Afzal Guru was hanged at 8 a.m.,” was confirmed by Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde shortly after the execution of the Jaish-e-Mohammad militant. "My information is that he will be buried in the campus but it's the jail authorities who will go by jail manual," he said.
Earlier reports said that the 43 year old, Afzal Guru, who was ordered to be sentenced to death in 2002 by a special court, which was also upheld by the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India in 2004.
The Jaish-e-Mohammad militant., Afzal Guru was 43 years of age. He was from Doabgah (Seer) village in the countryside of North Kashmir. He left behind his wife Tabassum and his 14 year old son Ghalib according to the IndiaToday.
Earlier on Oct 3, 2006, Afzal Guru's wife Tabasum Guru files a mercy petition with then President A P J Abdul Kalam. That mercy plea was rejected by the Indian President, Pranab Mukherjee few days back, said the Rashtrapati Bhavan spokespeman Venu Rajamony,
The confirmation of the rejection of the mercy plea reached the Home Ministers office on 03 February 2013. And this cleared the way for the execution of the death sentence of Afzal Guru.
Afzal Guru along with Shaukat Hussain (a former Delhi University student) and SAR Geelani (a college teacher in New Delhi ) were given the death punishment, which is given in 'rare of the rarest cases' in the Indian Judicial system. Later on Afshan Guru and SAR Geelani were given benefit of doubt and released by the Supreme Court. Shaukat Hussain Guru was released from Delhi's Tihar Jail on Dec 30, 2010.
Indian Political Parties welcomed the execution of the Guru. The BJP spokesman Rajiv Pratap Rudy said in his statement: "Though delayed, we still feel that the hanging of Afzal Guru was a right action. It has been done and the people of this country have been wanting and waiting for it for a long time".
Everyone seems to have alot to say on the execution of Afzal Guru. All political parties have welcomed the execution, saying that this will give a positive message about India to the terror groups.
@abdullah_0mar How many people were killed by forces, can You justify that? You are trying to mix oil with water by involving KPs.#AfzalGuru
In November 2012, Ajmal Kasab, the terrorist from Pakistan who was main accused in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack was executed in a Pune jail in a top-secret operation. This execution seems to have brought mixed feelings in public as evident from the tweets above. Hopefully the message of Indian Government would have reached the terror groups that India will no more allow such attacks and we are not as soft as considered.
